  Dr. Hossein Asadi

  Hossein Asadi is a Full Professor in Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Sharif University of Technology (SUT). He is currently a Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz since July 2021. He joined SUT in March 2009. He is the founder and the director of "Data Storage, Networks, and Processing" (DSN) lab with the main research in the field of "Data Storage Systems", "High-Performance Computing", "Memory Systems", "Virtualization", and "Operating Systems". The DSN lab is known as one of the premier and leading research groups in the World in the field of data storage systems. Since 2009, he has developed two new graduate courses ("Advanced Storage Systems" and "Reconfigurable Computing") in Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Sharif University of Technology (SUT).

  In 2011, he was awarded a Distinguished Lecturer Award by SUT. He got elevated to associate and full professor ranks at SUT in Oct. 2014 and Jan. 2020, respectively. In 2015, he co-founded the first company in the Middle East, designing and fabricating midrange, All-Flash, and high-end data storage systems. In the past few years, he received several prestigious awards from Sharif University of Technology, "Distinguished Researcher Award" in 2016, "Distinguished Research Institute Award" in 2016, "Distinguished Technology Award" in 2017, and "Distinguished Research Lab Award" in 2019. From 2016 to 2020, he has been consistently ranked in "Top-10" among 450+ faculties by Research and Technology Deputy, Sharif University of Technology. Prior joining to SUT, he was with EMC Corporation, headquartered in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. He worked at EMC as a research scientist and senior hardware engineer from 2006 to 2009. In 2008, he was granted "Extraordinary ability in Science" (O1) visa by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, sponsored by EMC Corporation. He was also a recipient of the Technical Award for the Best Robot Design from the International RoboCup Rescue Competition, organized by AAAI and RoboCup in 2001, a recipient of Best Paper Award at the 15th CSI International Symposium on Computer Architecture and Digital Systems (CADS) in 2010, and a recipient of Best Paper Award at IEEE/ACM Design, Automation, and Test in Europe (DATE) in 2019.

  His field of expertise is data storage systems and networks, solid-state drives, high-performance computing, and reconfigurable, and dependable computing. He has authored or co-authored more than a hundred publications in reputed journals and conference proceedings. He has served as the publication chair of several conferences. He has also served as a Guest Editor of IEEE Transactions on Computers, an Associate Editor of Microelectronics Reliability, and as a Program Co-Chair of the 18^th International Symposium on Computer Architecture & Digital Systems (CADS2015). More recently, he was visiting the School of Computer and Communication Sciences of Ecole Polytechnique Federele de Lausanne (EPFL) as an invited professor for the summer 2015. Dr. Asadi also holds several international patents. He is a member of ACM and a senior member of IEEE.

  Maryam Karimi

  Maryam Karimi is a Ph.D. student in Data Storage, Networks and Processing (DSN) Laboratory at Sharif University of Technology (SUT). She received her B.Sc. degree in hardware computer engineering from Shahid Beheshti University (SBU) in 2014, where she graduated as the second top student in her program. She then completed her M.Sc. degree in Computer Architecture at SUT in 2016. During her M.Sc. program, she worked on assessing and mitigating aging effects in microprocessors within nanoscale technologies. Her current research is focused on enhancing the performance and endurance of All-Flash Data Storage Systems.

  Mahdi Moradi

  Mehdi Moradi received the B.Sc. degree in computer engineering from University of Tehran in 2016. He completed his M.Sc. degree in computer software engineering at Iran University of Science and Technolgy in 2018. Since 2019, he has been working toward the Ph.D. degree in the Department of Computer Engineering at Sharif University of Technology.   Dr. Mostafa Kishani received the B.Sc. degree in computer engineering from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Mashhad, Iran, in 2008, M.Sc. degree in computer engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT), Tehran, Iran, in 2010, and Ph.D. degree in computer engineering from Sharif University of Technology (SUT), Tehran, Iran, in 2018. He is currently with 5Gmobile research lab at Czech Technical University in Prague. From September 2015 to April 2016 he was a research assistant in Computer Science and Engineering department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Hong Kong. He was also a research associate in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Hong Kong, from April 2016 to February 2017. He was a postdoctoral fellow in Data Storage, Networks, and Processing (DSN) Lab at SUT, Tehran, Iran, from December 2018 to February 2021. His research interests include fault tolerant systems design, data storage systems, emerging memory systems, and mobile edge computing.
  Thesis: Evaluating Availability of Data Storage Systems and Its Impact on Total Cost of Ownership
  From small businesses to large organizations and corporations, data is the most valuable and most vulnerable asset. The exponential explosion of digital data, known as Big Data, have evolved data storage industry and mandates new solutions for handling dependability and performance demands. Now Exa-scale datacenters employ millions of storage media that translates to multiple failures per hour. The storage design problem gets more dimensions by the emerge of Non-Volatile Memories (NVMs) and Solid State Drives (SSDs) that have limited endurance. Both industry and academy continuously struggle to evaluate and improve the dependability of data storage systems and minimize the chance of data unavailability and data loss. Data unavailability and data loss should be evaluated from end-user point of view and reported by meaningful metrics, examining a plenary of workloads and system configurations.
  My research is focused on evaluating and improving the dependability of data storage systems and finding the best trade-offs between performance, dependability, and cost. I mainly focus on the failures of disk subsystem, constructed by SSDs or Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), and storage controllers. I also have proposed new metrics for evaluating the vulnerability and availability of storage systems.

  Dr. Reza Salkhordeh

  I received the B.Sc. degree in computer engineering from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in 2011, and M.Sc. degree in computer engineering from Sharif University of Technology (SUT) in 2013. I received the Ph.D. degree from Sharif University of Technology (SUT) in 2018 under supervision of Prof. Hossein Asadi at Data Storage, Networks, and Processing (DSN) lab. I am currently a postdoctoral researcher in Efficient Computing and Storage Group at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz under supervision of Prof. André Brinkmann.   Dr. Saba Ahmadian

  Dr. Saba Ahmadian received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in computer engineering from Sharif University of Technology (SUT), Tehran, Iran, in 2013 and 2015, respectively. From 2011 to 2012, she was a member of Energy Aware Systems Lab (EASY), SUT, where she researched on power reduction techniques on embedded CPUs. From 2012 to 2015, she was a member of Embedded Systems Research Lab (ESR), SUT, where she researched on low power and reliability-aware techniques on automata-based embedded systems. Currently she is a Ph.D. candidate at Data Storage, Network, and Processing (DSN) Lab at SUT under supervision of Dr. Hossein Asadi. Her research interests include storage systems design, virtualization platforms, fault tolerant design, and Low power systems design.
  Thesis: Improving Efficiency of Storage Subsystems for Virtualized Platforms
  In recent years, high interest in using Virtual Machines (VMs) in data centers and Clouds has significantly increased the demand for high performance data storage systems. Recent studies have suggested using Solid State Drives (SSDs) as a caching layer for Hard Disk Drive (HDD) based storage subsystems in virtualized platforms. Such studies neglect to address the endurance and cost of SSDs which can significantly affect the efficiency of I/O caching. Moreover, previous studies neglect other important parameters such as write policy and request type, which can adversely affect both performance and endurance. In this thesis, we present an I/O caching scheme for virtualized platforms, which can significantly improve both the endurance and performance of storage subsystems by considering workload access pattern and requests type as opposed to previously proposed I/O caching schemes. In addition, we present fair I/O caching scheme which can be applied to virtualized platforms in order to guarantee QoS requirements by optimizing both performance and endurance of the SSD cache. Although I/O caching scheme can significantly improve system performance, it comes with significant reliability threat due to uncommitted write operations in the caching layer upon power failures. We also present a comprehensive analysis investigating the reliability of SSD caches under power failure in single and mirrored (RAID-1) configurations. To this end, we first develop a platform to perform two important features required for study: a) a fault injection into the SSD in the computing systems and b) data loss detection on the SSD upon power failure. Then we present the most reliable I/O caching configuration for each VM which improves the reliability of the running VMs under power failures.
  Experimental results show that our proposed SSD caching scheme on virtualized platforms improves the endurance and performance-per-cost of the SSD cache by 65% and 30% compared to the state-of-the-art dynamic cache partitioning scheme, respectively.

  Dr. Elham Cheshmikhani received the B.Sc. degree in computer engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), the M.Sc. degree in computer engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic), Tehran, Iran, in 2011 and 2013, respectively and the PhD degree in computer engineering from Sharif University of Technology (SUT), Tehran, Iran in Feb. 2020. She was a member of the Design and Analysis of Dependable Systems (DADS) at AUT from 2011 to 2015 and has been a member of the Dependable Systems Laboratory (DSL) and Data Storage, Networks & Processing Laboratory (DSN) since 2015 and 2017, respectively. Her research interests include emerging nonvolatile memory technologies, dependability analysis, fault tolerance, and storage systems.   Zeinab Seifoori

  Zeinab Seifoori has received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in computer engineering from Shahed University and SUT, Tehran, Iran, in 2006 and 2010, respectively. From 2015, she is working toward the Ph.D. degree in computer engineering in DSN Laboratory at the Department of Computer Engineering, SUT.   Thesis: Efficient Routing Architectures for Reconfigurable Devices
  Due to reduced Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) costs, shorter time to market, design flexibility, and reprogramming capability of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) as compared to Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), FPGAs has been raised as a suitable substrate for implementation of digital systems. However, high flexibility of reconfigurable devices leads to great power consumption, chip area, and reliability difference between ASICs and FPGAs. With the advancement of technology and significant downscaling of transistor feature size, the growth rate of static power consumption has been increased and become a limiting factor in further scaling of reconfigurable devices. Furthermore, such down scaling has been accompanied by reliability challenges in reconfigurable chips such as aging phenomenon and increased susceptibility to soft errors. Since routing resources contribute to more than half of total chip resources, reducing the power consumption and improving the reliability of routing resources can effectively help to improve power consumption, reliability, performance and area of total chip. The main aim of this proposal is suggesting architectures to enhance the efficiency of routing architecture of reconfigurable devices in dark silicon era.
